Over the past two decades, household size in San Diego averaged 2.7 persons. This means an increase in population of 1,000 required about 370 housing units to accommodate the additional residents. Figure 1 shows how, with few notable exceptions, the number of new households and the number of new housing units in San Diego marched in lock step since 1991.
