According to the National University System Institute for Policy Research, the San Diego craft beer industry contributes $299.5 million to the San Diego economy while creating or sustaining 2,796 jobs. To put that number in perspective, Comic-Con’s status as San Diego’s biggest convention only counts for $180 million.
Vince Vasquez is a senior policy analyst at National University, a craft beer fan himself (Coronado’s Mermaid’s Red is his favorite beer), and the author of the study. He says that while the San Diego craft beer industry has certainly exploded in recent years, there’s still plenty of room for growth. “While the industry’s meteoric growth rate isn't expected to continue indefinitely,” says Vasquez, “stronger partnerships and greater research may yield more economic benefits for both San Diego and the brewing community.”
