Gaslamp's tax contributions to city come to $86M

“For small businesses grouped in a relatively small area, that’s a significant amount of dollars,” said Kelly Cunningham, economist with National University System’s Institute for Policy Research.
Cunningham noted that other businesses throughout the city generate more in taxes, noting that a concentrated shopping mall occupying the same amount of real estate would generate more sales revenue, and a major hotel — such as the Hilton Convention Center Hotel — would bring in more property taxes.
“But the biggest impact of the Gaslamp,” he said, “is that it helps draw people downtown, where they spend even more money.”
