Kelly Cunningham, economist at the National University System Institute for Policy Research, forecasts that in 2015, the San Diego region's population will grow by 40,500 people, nearly half of which will be due to net migration. Cunningham noted that in 2013, the county broke a streak of 11 years in which more people left than moved in.
"This is a significant indicator or reflection for the improving economy and better job prospects drawing more people to the region," Cunningham said.
