Kelly Cunningham, an economist with National University’s Institute for Policy Research, estimated that if the workers were not able to find other employment within the region, within a year’s time the layoffs could result in the loss of 760 jobs at businesses that sell goods or services to NASSCO and 400 jobs related to spending cutbacks by the workers.
“Of course, the workers might be hired back or be able to find other jobs outside the industry, but that’s what the annual impact of that kind of job loss in the shipping industry would be,” Cunningham said.
