Region's Ability to Get Defensive Gives Economy Shot in the Arm

The National University System Institute for Policy Research said in July that the value of defense contracts in San Diego County was $11.1 billion in 2008. The 2009 number would either match or exceed that, the institute said. Defense spending has kept San Diego from sinking further into the mire of recession. It has kept the community from going the way of Las Vegas or cities in Arizona, says Kelly Cunningham, an economist with the institute, which conducts research on regional issues such as economic policy and housing.
