On the impacts to hiring from the presidential election, the fiscal cliff, and the European debt crisis:
Kelly Cunningham, economist at the National University System Institute for Policy Research:
I think when it comes to employers, there’s a lot of doubt. They’re not sure about the state of the economy, so they’re not willing to expand and grow. This happens every election but to some degree, I think this year, particularly, there’s such a divergent path to where the Democrats and the Republicans are talking about leading the country.
As a business owner or someone who wants to invest in some kind of expansion you just see these things compounding and it doesn’t give you clarity or confidence, and so you hold back until you see a little bit better and we kick it down a little bit more, but still the problem remains. As an investor I get asked a lot where’s a good place to put your money, when something’s down, that’s a good time, but you have to have confidence it’s going to go back up.
