“That’s something that Big Beer has been looking at for some time, to expand their market presence,” said Vince Vasquez, a senior policy analyst for the National University System Institute for Policy Research. “We are going to see a larger Big Beer presence.”
That's a smart business move, Vasquez added. For more than a decade, MillerCoors and other industrial brewing concerns have lost beer fans to craft breweries. One response: Don’t beat ‘em or join ‘em, just buy ‘em. Anheuser-Busch, for instance, has purchased Chicago’s Goose Island (2011), New York’s Blue Point (2014), Oregon’s 10 Barrel (2014) and Seattle’s Elysian (2015).
That could be a positive development, Vasquez maintained, if Big Beer’s marketing and distributing powers are harnessed to deliver San Diego craft beer to consumers across the nation.
“Is this a starting point to learn more about San Diego beer, to whet people’s appetites?” he asked. “That remains to be seen."
