Nationally, the nearly 10 percent of store vacancies correlates “amazingly” well with the 10 percent of retail sales conducted online. Online retail helps move merchandise, but lessens sales impacts on local businesses. San Diego is not a major center for consumer goods production. Other than increasing demand for warehousing and transit of goods, online sales lessen demand for retail space and workers, and lowers the portion of retail spending that would go to local businesses.
