Should paid sick time be required?

Although it makes sense for most employers to provide paid sick leave, imposing costly mandates on all businesses, even for part-timers who only work a few days per year, does not. When elected officials impose one-size-fits-all government mandates, small businesses are hurt the most. Larger companies may have pools of workers to shuffle around when employees do not show up, but small operations may not have that capability. Mandating paid sick leave raises labor costs, increases unemployment, limits employer flexibility to design leave benefit packages for their unique workforces, and may cause many businesses with little profit margins to close.
