The crucial summer tourist season is off to a strong start, with National University System Institute for Policy Research estimating that the recent Fourth of July weekend by itself would bring more than 950,000 visitors to San Diego city beaches...

Vince Vasquez, senior policy analyst at the National University institute, said the local region in most years benefits from a large contingent of summer visitors looking for an escape from extreme temperatures in places such as Phoenix, Las Vegas and other regions of Northern and Southern California.

Vasquez said a 2012 analysis by National University found that the "Big Bay Boom" fireworks show July 4 generated $10.6 million in total economic benefits for the region, including $6 million in additional revenue from lodging, retail purchases, restaurants and tourist attractions.
