Last summer, San Diego County's dining and drinking establishments added 6,000 jobs between May and August, the same number in 2007 and the highest in two decades, according to San Diego economist Kelly Cunningham.
"It is surprising," he said. "It may partly be due to restaurants having scaled back employment so much the previous three years and needing to ramp up hiring to accommodate demand. It clearly reflects improving business for San Diego restaurants.
"I suspect the number of jobs added this summer will not be quite as much, probably between 4,000 and 5,000."
